UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Africa has become exemplary in resolving problems and conflicts peacefully.
The secretary-general made the remark at a joint press conference he held with AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat at the AU Headquarters today.
“I believe Africa is becoming example where it is possible to solve problems and prevent conflicts. And I believe that this window of hope will be extended to other parts of the world,” he added.
Geterres said this is the moment in which a wind of hope is blowing in Africa, and “we have seen the reconciliation between Ethiopia and Eritrea. We have seen peace agreement established in South Sudan.”
According to him, the strategic cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations is fundamental in conflict prevention and resolution.
“The two can combine and achieve results in conflict resolution and prevention of conflicts,” Guterres underscored.
UN and AU are working together very closely by aligning development agendas and facing the challenges of climate change, he noted, adding that “we need to tell the international community that we need more political will and development cooperation as there is no peace without development.”
African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat urged member countries to steadfastly conclude ratifying the free trade agreement and move on towards its implementation.
To that end, he said, countries need to open their borders, ease visa system and accelerate free movement of persons.
